A sticking piston can manifest in two main scenarios, each with distinct symptoms:
Piston Fails to Retract (Dragging Brake):
The brake rotor on the affected wheel will exhibit persistent and abnormal heat, potentially even smoking.
Vehicle rolling resistance increases noticeably, creating a sensation as if the brakes are constantly lightly applied.
Fuel consumption rises.
The corresponding brake pad on that wheel will experience abnormally rapid wear.
Piston is Completely Seized:
The affected wheel loses all braking force, causing the vehicle to pull sharply to one side during braking.
Since the other wheels must compensate and handle the entire braking load, the vehicle's overall braking efficiency is severely compromised.
