In floating calipers, the guide pins are essential for proper sliding movement. If the dust boots protecting the guide pins become torn, allowing dirt and moisture to enter, or if the lubricating grease dries out, their sliding motion can be hindered. The consequences are similar to those of a stuck piston: uneven brake pad wear, abnormal disc wear, increased fuel consumption, and potentially sharp noises during braking.
